Bank-Roll was explaining to Pepper how he had just missed Aubrey-Mack and Paula. They had gone to an 8:30 appointment with the doctor. Paula had insisted, when the pain in Aubrey’s back kept him up the entire night before.

Pepper expressed concern about Aubrey’s condition and gave Bank-Roll five grand to give to him. Pepper told Bank-Roll to inform Aubrey that all went well and that he would be in touch for another car within the week. They left the Buick in the garage and rode away in the Chevy Nova.

They parked about one block over and behind Lorraine’s apartment on Evans Street. One by one, they walked down the alley and through the back door. Pepper carried the boxes of chocolate turtles, and Diamond carried the handcrafted cedar box containing the four-forty Magnum that Seed had given to Pepper. Bootchie brought up the rear, carrying a Chicago Bulls equipment bag containing fifty-nine thousand dollars.

Pepper opened the door and proceeded into the living room where Lorraine and Harris were looking over some dresses, skirts, sweaters, and shoes. Very expensive merchandise! Two women were also present. One was Pepper’s cousin, Fudge, and the other was a very fat but cute girl they called Big Doris, who was from Indianapolis and known across the country as a master booster. She was credited with having been the first booster to perfect the method of carrying portable television sets out of a store between her knees under a full-length dress or coat.

Fudge hugged Pepper as soon as he walked into the living room. “Hey, cousin! I been tryin’ to catch up with you ever since I heard you were home. I been up in Detroit workin’, but my man, Hall-bey, told me you came by to get the scanner. I knew you had come right out, goin’ to work. Hey, Uncle Bootchie! Congratulations! I heard Barbara had a little boy.”

Upon hearing that news, Bootchie dropped the bag and went to the kitchen to call Gary.

Lorraine looked up at Pepper. “I think I saw your show on TV, Pepper, but I could be wrong. Am I?”

“Naw, Mama, you’re not wrong, but everything’s okay.”

Fudge looked at Diamond and said, “Girl, I ain’t seen you since you and Roany were tight. You hooked up with my cousin now?”

Diamond sat on the couch next to Lorraine and, without answering Fudge, asked: “You got anything in slacks in my size? Those sweaters and shoes look good.”

Fudge never missed a beat. “I know we got somethin’ in your size, Diamond, but I don’t think you wanna spend the kind-a money we’re askin’. Now, I got some other stuff out in the car you might like to look at.”

The sparks that flew between the two women were so evident, one could almost smell smoke in the room. Diamond looked at Pepper who was perched on the arm of the big easy chair where Big Doris sat. He nodded, knowing what Diamond was asking with her eyes. With her foot, she pulled the equipment bag closer to her.
